The Helmut Netwerker interview
Helmut Netwerker is a longline master ! As you may have noticed in our record tab, Yuri Rhodenborgh is owning the longline polyester record. However the day Yuri did that record, he wasn’t alone : Helmut was there and he also walked the longline. He also managed to beat the longline nylon record the same day !! 405 m on polyester and 283m on nylon. Helmut is a recordman !
We managed to interview Helmut and to ask him the important question : “Do you like chocolate ?”
Where are you from ?
Vienna, Austria
Since how long do you slack ?
5 years
When did you send your two world records ?
On 24.10.2014
We know that Yuri crossed the 405m too, and we can read his traning story, what about yours ?
Philipp Gesing invited me to his event and I just wanted to know how bouncing a 400m line feels.
I didn’t train especially for this line. If I go slacklining, I always train or try to push my limits.
After rigging both lines, Yuri was the first who started on the 405m (skillshot) and as nobody else wanted to, I went to the 283m (Type-18). We walked it both.
Couple of minutes later I tried the 400. I wasn’t confident with this line in first place so I needed several tries to walk the first 100m. After playing in the middle I gave the last part a try. As I managed to walk the last part without any struggles, I was self-confident enough to sent the line, so I did it.
What the longest highline you walk ?
92m
Do you have any sponsor ?
No
As you can actualy see, in France there is a debate about the possible slackline federation, what about federation in your country and are you involved ?
In 2011, the three biggest slackline associations from Austria (slackline.at, teambalance, vienna-slackliners) found the austrian slackline federation.
At the moment I am president of the federation.
Highline should be completly free or should be rules ?
To avoid accidents with flying objects (helicopters, planes, paragliders…) we have a “highline declaration formular” at our website. If you rig a highline in Austria (or at the borders close to), please fill in the form :
http://www.slacklineverband.com/formulare/highline-formular/
What was the last line you walk ?
60m sonic at the park
Something in you refrigerator ?
pumpkin seed oil
What did you do last sunday ?
went highlining
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be ?
not always being too late
A phrase you say often:
disco
Your biggest fear is :
to stop playing like a little child
Your biggest worry is :
don´t worry be happy
Your biggest weakness is ?
interested in too many things
A guilty pleasure of yours is :

Something you could use more of in life is :
spending time with my family
What webbing you usually use ?
it depends on whether I want to play with or I just want to walk
Do you listen music by slacklining, and what ?
I always listen to music while I slackline, it helps me to stay in “the zone”. I like different styles of music: hiphop, metal, electronic, atmosphere, … but my all time favourite is “Bobby McFerrin – don´t worry be happy”
The last message you sent ?
Sorry, I can´t manage to come to the ISPO
The best advice you’ve Ever received is :
to breath out through the nose
What quality do you admire most in other people ?
endurance

Turkey, Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland, Italy
Where will you go in 2015 ?
Turkey, France, … ?
What goals would you like to achieve this year ?
stay motivated, be more confident on the highline
What does it feel to walk 405m and during a looooooong time ?
it feels like: wow just 3 winddampers left … no wait , they are 5, … thinking about the distance between the dampers (nearly 50m), calculating, … shit … not even the middle

Rodeo surfing
Rodeo surfing is pure fun ! But it’s not easy to master.
Samuel Volery gives you excellent advise in this video, enjoy !
The Machard Drisse
The ” Machard-Drisse” ! It’s the latest product made by Slack-Mountain.
If you have no jumar, you can do a machard knot on your rope. It’s exactly the same system with a webbing. This is an alternative to the line grip !
The system uses a boat drisse of 20mm in polyester that leaves the webbing straight when stretching ! It’s a great idea and it’s cheap. We are talking about 15€ vs 160€ euros for a line grip. It’s a huge gap !
It only weights 196 gr, so two times less than a line grip. We all focus about getting light gear, so it’s a good compromise.
The WLL is 800 kg and the MBS 2t4, so it’s more than reasonable.
As it’s only textile and has not metal, the lifetime of the Machard-Drisse is not as long as the line grip. Note that it’s only compatible with polyester webbing. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with hybrides, dyneema and other textile.
So for low budget the Machard Drisse is perfect, specially if you slack on the floor. For highline, we suggest to use a line grip since it’s faster to setup.

Passion : the new elephant webbing
Awesome news !! Elephant Slackline just released its first polyamide webbing !!
With 11% stretch at 800 kilos, this means huge bounce !
The Bluewing is famous and a pleasure to slack, so imagine now the Passion ! It will be pure fun to slack this new webbing.
The passion is bicolor : red on one side and white on the other side. 25mm width. With 3.6mm of thickness, which is really thick, we speak about 69 gr per meters. It will break at 3,3T so it’s rather strong.
Stretch is 11 % for 750kg and 15% for 1T5. It’s soft !
The max length available is 200m. By the time you will have clear that, they will probably allow you to buy more.
On the field we managed to get Lukas Irmler impressions (Elephant slackline pro), as he was lucky enough to test the webbing :
“The new Passion Slackline Webbing from Elephant-Slacklines is pure nylon and pure fun. Its awesome for bouncing surfing and all kinds of tricks. Its quite a thick webbing, making the edges round and soft, which is quite awesome on highlines and waterlines – to make it sort its my new favorite”

How to clean your webbing
Cleaning your webbing is highly recommendable and even more : it’s necessary. We recommend to clean your webbing once a year. Winter time is a great period since we slack less than in summer time. Cleaning your webbing helps to last longer the life of your webbing and to avoid dirt and dust that damage the webbing. So to keep your webbing in a good shape during a long time, then clean it !
How to proceed and what soap is appropriate ?
There are two different ways to do it : manual or mechanical. Manual means that you will use your hands with a cleaning brush and mechanical means washing machine.
– The manual way :
You will need to be patient because it requires time, but it’s the best technic. You’ll be able to dig deep.
Fill a washing-up bowl or your bath – it depends on the length of your webbing. The water needs to be hot but no more than 30°C. Do not go higher than 30°C otherwise this damage your webbing.
Drop the soap. Make sure you use the appropriate soap. It’s a little paradoxal since you should not use soap but a mixture without soap. Beal is selling a perfect mixture for ropes and webbings, but you can also use baby cleaning moisture which are really soft like Klorane: no soap, no paraben and no preservative.
Dive the webbing and manage to make bubbles by mixing everything together. Leave it inside the water for 20 mins and start the hardest part : rub.
With a washing brush (not to soft, not hard) rub the webbing. Too hard will damage the webbing, to soft will not clean enough. If you have a long and dirty webbing, then you’ll need to be patient. Don’t forget to rub both side. Cleaning 100m takes about 2 hours.
Leave the webbing inside the water after you rubbed it to make sure it won’t dry with the bubbles. Once you have rub the entire length, rinse everything with clear water. Better to do it twice.
To dry the webbing, leave it on a line in a dry place. Avoid the sun because it’s the worse enemy of your webbing (UV).
The result is usually satisfying. On the picture below you can see on the left the webbing after the cleaning and on the right the webbing before cleaning.
– The washing machine :
Do not use regular washing powder , but use one of the products that we recommend above : Beal cleaning mixture or Klorane. The quantity should be equal to what you’ll use for an equal volume of clothes.
Three things are important to preserve your webbing in a good shape. First use a net like shown in the picture below.
Use a program such as hand wash or wool. This is soft and safe.
Do not go higher than 30°C. If you use cold water, then this will probably not clean enough. Best is 30°C .
To dry, do not use a dryer. Hang it in a dry place and avoid the sun.
Don’t leave it wet on the floor in a mess.

All these technics work for ropes, only the rub will be different. You’ll find them in good climbing shops
Let’s go cleaning !

The beard, the longline and Théo
It’s just about Théo Sanson and his beard walking on a 300m longline ! Versailles is well known for the Castle, the catapult and the longline spot of course. It’s entertaining, well filmed and we love Théo. Is wearing a bear the latest cool thing to C’est sympa, bien filmé et on adore Théo. So, does the beard matter ?
A story behind highlining
If you are in love with highline, then Meteora Greece should be one of your dream spot. This video from Wojtek is amazing and probably one of the best edit online. This was one of the first video I watched on the web a few years back after I started highline seriously. I was stoked to discover Faith Dickey, Jan Galek, Jakub Kwjet, Jordan Tybon and Wojtek Kozakiewicz hiking on huge highlines with such an awesome background.
The towers in Meteroa are incredible but if you plan your trip there, don’t forget a good climbing leader.
