Brakes comparison

There are a dozen of brakes available on the market and I noticed that each one as a different opinion on what brake is the most appropriate for slackline.

To be honest, each brake has his own good and weak points. Some are compact but weak, so are strong but heavy, some other are hard to find. The perfect brake for everyone does not exist but all can do the job.

Here is a short comparison of the most frequent brakes used on the field

Slack Valentin

Valentin’s Day is coming next week and for those who did not managed to reserve a dinner in their favorite restaurant… there is one great plan B for you. Thank Alexander Schulz for his amazing idea: in 2012, One Inch Dreams organized a diner on a spaceline between Alex and his girlfriend. How romantic is that ? At least it’s something she won’t forgot !

Don’t forget your warmer jacket since it’s freezing outside !

Pulley for dummies

Let’s focus on pulleys which are fundamental to rig a longline. We’ll start with the basics : how pulleys work ?

In a near future we’ll compare all pulleys available on the market and then get expert tips from an engineer on pulleys performance

So here is pulleys for dummies and a bonus: how to reeve your pulley system with Jerry Miszewski

rope swing – be aware

ropeswing 2

Rope jump and rope swing are very popular these days and many slackliner are doing them. It’s an amazing experience and we enjoy this filling of free fall. But safety first: it’s not something to do without experience. A highline needs experienced people to install it, and it’s the same for swing ropes. What we’ve learned in this swing rope accident in Australia (Blue Mountains) is that we should always check vertically ! Throw a stone, count same as BASE jumpers do. If a ledge is on the way, make sure you can clear it before jumping. Luckily here, the accident ended a good way eventhough legs got broken. Be safe and analyse first !

Man on wire

man_on_wire 2

I did start slacklining after watching this fascinating movie: Man on wire . Every limits are pushed beyond imagination to create something unique. Philippe Petit did this impossible. He is the first and the last one who dared to do that stunt. We follow his footsteps. For people in our community we all know that slackline and tight rope are different since the balance is not similar to manage. Samuel Volery (slack master) challenges Freddy Noch, a tight rope master and the outcome is surprising ! Check it out :

Triceratop : triple pulleys

triceratops

Double pulleys, are known ! Quadruple are known ! But the triple are unheard in slackline or climbing !! Only boats use triple pulleys. Triceratops are not dinosaurs : there’re the latest innovation from Slack Mountain, : triple pulleys ! Performance is excellent, it is announced at 97%, so almost no loss. Unit price is € 80 and only 147 € for a pair. It’s cheaper than the Armstrong from Slack.fr, but expensiver than the Slackimoufle of Slack’inov … Difficult to compare as they are the only triple pulleys on the market. So it is between the price of a quadruple and a double : quite reasonable in fact ! Ergonomically, it is inspired by the latest model of the dual pulley from Slack.fr : a flange fixed grip making multiplier office docking allows to blocker under its hauling , thus saving a sling ! There is no friction. With only 960gr it is normal: it is not super light but it’s hard hard to do any better actually! For the shape is not color tuning fashion style: chrome raw metal color : oldshool style ! We always keep the best for last – the resistance : a workload to 1T6 and breaking load at 8t, which leaves room for jumpeurs ! Hold on, you know that manufacturers always leave room on the predicted failure load, and we have a great and surprising information from Romain Schempf , the creator of Triceratop : ” During my labatory test the triple pulleys did not broke : the rope broke before at 105KN be 10t5 ” Wow! Hurry up before the stock runs out !

To purchase the beast !

Slackline Catapult

Slacktivity team is having fun on a 265M longline used as a giant catapult in the the snow. We’ve already seen the same type of fun on a 300m longline in Versailles and a 320m longline in the Alps with the Slack.fr team . So you’ve got now some ideas of things to do during the winter with your longline. 32m of swing, can you do any better ?

Jediah Doohan, Choco exclusive interview

highlinejediahprofile3

The UK slack scene is not the most popular in Europe. However, you’ve got there a slack ripper called Jediah Doohan who is trying to push the limits of the slackline. No wonder why Jediah just entered the Balance Community pro team. We managed to ask him a few questions to know his personality a little better.

Where are you from ?

New Milton, Hampshire , UK

What do you love most about your hometown ?

I love that it is so close to the forest

Since how long do you slack ?

Since summer 2011

How did you enter into Balance Community ?

I realised that the direction I wanted to go with my slacklining ran largely parallel with Balance Community’s

The longest line you ever walked: highline and slack ?

longline – 237m

highline – 103.4m

What did you do last Sunday ?

I went rodeolining in the forest

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be ?

I’d become more appreciative of how lucky I am to be alive

A phrase you say often is :

“WOOP WOOP!!!”

A common misconception about yourself is :

That I only practice longline and highline, I love all types of slacklining, it’s all just so much fun!

Your biggest fear is :

Not getting the absolute most out of my life

Your biggest worry is :

That I won’t fulfil my full potential as a human being capable of spreading love and happiness

Your biggest weakness is :

Lack of moderation

A Guilty pleasure of yours is :

Smoking cigarettes

An excuse you use often is :

I’d rather be slacklining

Something you could use more of in life is :

More sun

Something in your refrigerator ?

I am mostly living in my van – I don’t own a fridge :)

What country would you most like to visit ?

Chile, Patagonia

What webbing do you usually use ?

Type 18

Your favourite possession is :

Right now I particularly love my ProSeries swivel from CMC

Your first thoughts upon waking up are ?

Let’s go slacklining

What passion did you have before slacklining ?

Hedonism and playing bass guitar in bands

The last line you walked was :

My friend’s indoor rodeoline

The song you usually listen when you slack ?

Anything by Proverb.

The last meal you ate was :

Mexican Chilli beans and rice

The last text message you sent was :

“Cool, Life is great. What r u up to in your life at the moment?”

The best advice you’ve ever received was :

Do what it is in life that you love/ inspires you

The best word to describe your life is ?

STOKED

What quality do you admire most in other people ?

The ability to make the mundane into the amazing and the exiting

One mistake you’ve done rigging a line ?

I was using soft-release to de-tension a very tight 100m Nylon line at the “safety meeting” festival. I fed it through till it looked like it was almost totally loose and then let it go. The entire thing made a sound like a gun-shot and rocketed away from the anchor. Lesson learned.

Highline should be completely free or there should be rules ?

There are obviously basic principles which make sense to adhere to like don’t start in the “no fall zone” and rules would mean standardisation which means competition which means getting more money into highlining etc. However I don’t do highlining to compete with others, I do it to compete with myself and because the feeling of being on a highline is my favourite feeling in the world

 You think solo is :

I now don’t free solo. I think that the wrong reasons to do it are if you are caring about what other people are thinking about you, or if you are taking pictures of it.

What goals would you like to achieve this year ?

My aim this year is to continue hanging out with awesome, stoked highliners and work on sending a 200m+ nylon highline

Thanks Jediah !
